Written Answers. - Renewable Energy Projects.

James Leonard

James Leonard

Ceist:

89 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the cross-Border proposals, if any, there are for the production of energy through indigenous renewable resources biomass under INTERREG II funding. [17993/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 17 and 89 together.

I draw the Deputy's attention to the second round of the Energy Challenge competition which I launched on 26 September last. This is a joint North-South initiative funded under the INTERREG II programme. The aim of this initiative is to encourage local entities in the INTERREG region to asses their energy supply and demand situation and to seek local solutions to their energy problems.

Under the second round of Energy Challenge, grants of up to £20,000 per project are available towards the cost of carrying out feasibility studies in the following areas: biomass potential, including energy crops, biofuel, biogas and energy from waste; local wind energy potential; local hydro power possibilities; energy efficiency in buildings; and community or district heating systems.

The deadline for receipt of completed applications is 1 December 1996 and supported studies should commence in January 1997. Studies must be completed by 30 November 1997.

For the Deputy's information, I am circulating a list of projects supported under the first round of Energy Challenge in 1995.
