Vol. 470 No. 6

Written Answers. - Juvenile Diversion Project.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

73 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Justice the current position regarding the introduction of a youth diversion scheme in the parishes of Darndale, Belcamp and Priorswood, Dublin 17. [19636/96]

As I have previously stated, the juvenile diversion projects funded by my Department are targeted at specific, large, high density urban areas where there are special circumstances e.g.a combination of a large young population, high unemployment and a lack of basic amenities. The projects have a very particular focus and are directed at young people who are either involved in or who are most at risk of becoming involved in crime. Proposals for such projects are carefully evaluated in order to ensure that they meet the primary focus of such schemes.

A proposal for the area in question is currently being considered by my Department in consultation with the Garda and I expect to be in a position to make a decision on it shortly.
