Vol. 470 No. 6

Written Answers. - Airport Rail Link.

Seamus Brennan

Ceist:

88 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the possibility, if any, of Aer Rianta being requested by the Government to operate and fund the cost of a rail link from Dublin Airport to the city centre; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19567/96]

I do not envisage Aer Rianta operating a rail link to Dublin Airport. CIE and Aer Rianta, however, have recently set up a working group to examine the feasibility of a rail connection from the airport to the mainline rail network.

The study is expected to be completed in mid-1997 and will examine such areas as route and station options, mode — whether diesel or electric — and cost. Liaison will be maintained between the working group, the Dublin transportation office and my Department.

The question of funding will be considered when the outcome of the feasibility study is known.
