Vol. 470 No. 7

Written Answers. - Drug Abuse.

David Andrews

Ceist:

83 Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to drug problems in Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin; and if he will include identified areas in this community in the ministerial task force on drug abuse. [19765/96]

Limerick East): The first report of the ministerial task force on measures to reduce the demand for drugs, which has been approved by Government, was published on 10 October last. The task force based its report on 123 submissions which were received from all over the country and also from discussions with the Health Research Board, which had compiled details of treated drug misuse in the greater Dublin area and with the chief executive officer of the Eastern Health Board. The first report concentrated on the heroin abuse problem and identified ten priority areas in the Dublin area, but Dún Laoghaire was not listed among these areas. The task force will continue to meet and to report on various aspects of demand reduction for drugs. The issue of service provision in Dún Laoghaire will be dealt with by the relevant agencies in the light of the task force recommendations.
