Vol. 470 No. 7

Written Answers. - Doneraile (Cork) Building.

Mary Harney

Ceist:

116 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if his attention has been drawn to a proposal to demolish a Georgian building which houses the Garda station in Doneraile, County Cork; his views on whether this would damage the architectural heritage of the town; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19731/96]

My attention has been drawn to the proposed demolition of the old Garda station in Doneraile, County Cork. I am advised that the building is in the ownership of the Commissioners of Public Works and that planning permission has been granted for demolition of the building and for the development of a new Garda station and other commercial development on the site subject to a condition that the development will be in keeping with the Georgian streetscape.

I understand that this matter has also been drawn to the attention of the Heritage Council, who have had the building inspected, and I have asked the council for its urgent advice on the matter.
