Ceist:

182 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that temporary accommodation is currently being provided for in excess of 300 students at Carlow Regional Technical College; the plans, if any, she has to provide permanent accommodation for these students; her policy in relation to such accommodation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20396/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 181 and 182 together.

The college authorities appointed consultants to prepare a campus development plan for the Regional Technical College, Carlow. The development plan has been completed and my Department has conveyed approval to the college to proceed with the planning and design of a learning resource centre, a catering and services building, improvements to existing buildings and upgrading site infrastructure, including parking, access and services. I understand from the college authorities that tender documentation in relation to the site infrastructure works will be issued shortly and that a contractor will be on site in early 1997. I also understand that the consultants are at an advanced stage of the design of the other capital projects and that tenders will be sought during the first half of 1997.

As I indicated in my press release of 13 January 1994, a sum of £4 million was allocated under the 1994 to 1999 European Regional Development Fund Programme for capital developments at the college. This sum remains available for the college and will allow construction work to commence on the priority stages of the development of Carlow Regional Technical College in 1997. A decision in respect of further capital funding for the college will be taken in the context of other priorities and overall resource constraints.
