107 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance when the special PAYE allowance was introduced; whether the rate was always £800; and the rate the allowance would be in 1996/1997 if it was indexed-linked from its introduction. [20121/96]

The PAYE allowance in its current form was introduced in the tax year 1980-81 at the rate of £400. This figure index linked since 1980 would be of the order of £965 in the current tax year 1996-97.
