Vol. 471 No. 3

Written Answers. - Conditions at Belmarsh Prison.

Noel Dempsey

Ceist:

20 Mr. Dempsey asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs whether he has made representations and sent submissions to the United Kingdom authorities in relation to the conditions for category A prisoners in Belmarsh Prison; if so, when; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20662/96]

I refer the Deputy to my answer to written Question No. 56 of 6 November 1996.

In addition, with regard to the Deputy's question regarding details of contacts between the Irish and British Governments relating to prison issues, the Deputy will be aware that it is not the practice to give details of diplomatic exchanges with other Governments. However, I can assure him that prison issues, including humanitarian aspects of the conditions in which category A prisoners are held, are regularly raised within the framework of the Anglo-Irish Intergovernmental Conference and by the Irish Embassy in London with the relevant British authorities.
