Vol. 471 No. 5

Written Answers. - Community Television Companies.

Mary Coughlan

Ceist:

166 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the technical people who have been appointed to advise him with regard to the community television companies who have applied for transmitting licences; and the date on which he proposes to make a decision on the matter. [21300/96]

I refer the Deputy to the reply I gave in this House on 8 October 1996 to Questions Nos. 215 and 216 in relation to consultants appointed by me to make a technical assessment of an application from South Coast Community Television for a licence to operate their TV retransmission service.

The consultants' brief does not extend to making an assessment of any other application but, as I have said before, I will have regard to the implications for other deflector systems which may arise from that assessment.

The consultancy contract is with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the individual members are:
Mr. Ken Hunt (the EBU),
Mr. Jan Doeven (The Netherlands), and
Mr. Daniel Sauvet-Goichon (France)
I hope to have a report from the consultants by the end of this month and a decision in the matter will be taken as soon as possible thereafter.
