Vol. 471 No. 5

Written Answers. - Road Signs.

David Andrews

Ceist:

41 Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the serious situation in relation to the lack of sign posting in the country; the action, if any, he intends to take in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18705/96]

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

122 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment if he has satisfied himself that the road traffic directional signs are satisfactory; if he has considered improvements for such directional signposting; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21213/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 41 and 122 together.

Overall responsibility for the provision of traffic signs on the national road network is a matter for the National Roads Authority. Responsibility for signposting on non-national roads is a matter for each local road authority.
To ensure that traffic signing is of a consistently high standard, arrangements have been made for the preparation of a comprehensive traffic signs manual which is expected to be published and made available to road authorities within the next two weeks.
