Vol. 471 No. 5

Written Answers. - Human Rights in Nigeria.

Michael P. Kitt

Ceist:

76 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will again call on the Nigerian Government to commit itself to establishing respect for human rights in Nigeria; and the steps, if any, which the international community will take in this regard. [21272/96]

I refer the Deputy to my replies to Questions Nos. 135 of 15 October, 31 of 24 October and 66 of 30 October in which I have outlined the current steps being taken by the European Union in order to help bring about an early return to democratic rule and full respect for human rights and the rule of law in Nigeria. As I have confirmed in my earlier replies, the Irish Presidency is actively engaged with EU partners and other interested parties in relation to these matters.
