Vol. 471 No. 7

Written Answers. - Therapists Training.

Rory O'Hanlon

Ceist:

248 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to ensure that an adequate number of speech therapists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists are trained each year; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22199/96]

The Higher Education Authority has the statutory function of maintaining a continuous review of the demand and need for higher education. Where there is a demand and recognised need for places, or courses, in the university sector, it is the normal procedure for consultation to take place between the relevant college authorities and the HEA. The Higher Education Authority would in turn consult with appropriate bodies as necessary.

In 1995-96 the following were the full-time undergraduate student numbers in the areas referred to by the Deputy.

TCD

UCD

Occupational Therapy

119

Speech Therapy

99

Physiotherapy

127

141

There have been no formal proposals in recent years from the colleges concerned to increase student numbers in these areas.
