I am informed by the Garda authorities that information relating to the number of indictable offences committed by persons on bail is published in the Garda Commissioner's Annual Report on Crime, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library. I am further informed that information relating to the number of summary offences committed by persons on bail is not readily available.
The statistics relate, of course, only to detected indictable offences. The number of such offences detected in 1995 was, 5,440. On the basis of an overall detection rate of 39 per cent, it would not be unreasonable to estimate that the total number of offences committed by persons on bail may have been of the order of 14,000.
