Vol. 471 No. 7

Written Answers. - Cork Projects Funding.

Dan Wallace

Ceist:

95 Mr. D. Wallace asked the Taoiseach the total value of support during 1995 from his Department for projects in Cork county and city; if he will identify each such project; the level of funding allocated in respect of each such project during 1995; and if he will break down each value into Exchequer and EU sub-components. [21546/96]

The following groups were funded by the Exchequer under the scheme of grants for special local development projects in 1995:

(1) Togher Community Group, Togher, Cork, £20,000. Funding towards the production of a newsletter for the area and the preparation of an environmental improvement plan.

(2) Mahon Community Action Plan, Mahon Shopping Centre, Avenue De Rennes, Mahon, Cork, £30,000. Funding for a community desk top publishing business and a community resource park.

In addition, the Famine Commemoration Committee provided the following grant during 1995:

Cork Civic Trust, £1,000. Grant towards the restoration of a Famine graveyard in Cork.

My Department has responsibility for two EU supported operational programmes: (i) the local urban and rural development and (ii) URBAN. Both of them will support projects in Cork in the period to 1999. My Department does not provide direct funding to specific projects.

Decisions on funding and selection of projects are taken at local level by the designated management structures for the programmes.

Allocations under URBAN will commence shortly. These will be managed through the Cork Steering Group.

In the case of the Local Urban and Rural Development Programme, funding is allocated by Area Development Management Ltd., the intermediary company for the programme. The allocations made by ADM, in 1995, to Cork based groups are as follows: Mahon Community Group, £32,000 (75 per cent EU funding); Mallow Area Development Community Group, £36,000 (75 per cent EU funding); Cork Community Development, £5,000 (75 per cent EU funding) and Cork City Partnership, £397,120 (75 per cent EU funding).
