The number of prison officers, representing all grades up to and including the grade of Governor as on 14 November 1996, is 2,484. This figure includes 18 officers who are job-sharing. This represents a total of 2,475 posts currently filled in the prison service.
As the prison service provides a 24 hour service, 365 days per year, these figures are not indicative of the number of officers who may be on duty at any one time.
