Vol. 471 No. 8

Written Answers. - Hospital Waiting Lists.

Mary O'Rourke

Ceist:

72 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Health if he will review the case of a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath who urgently requires special surgery; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that this person was told by the specialist she consulted under the medical card system that there was no more that could be done for her; if his attention has been further drawn to the fact that a consultant neurosurgeon under the private system has now recommended treatment for this specific problem and that this person had to pay half of the family weekly income for this appointment; if he will have arrangements made for immediate treatment for this patient in view of her increasingly crippling condition; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22364/96]

Limerick East): Decisions concerning the appropriate treatment for any given patient is a clinical decision which is the responsibility of the consultant concerned and, as the Deputy will appreciate, is a matter in which I, as Minister for Health, cannot intervene. However, I have referred the information submitted by the Deputy concerning the case in question to the Midland Health Board and it has advised me that the matter has been referred to the consultant concerned for a report. I will write to the Deputy with any further information that comes to hand in relation to this matter.
