209 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for Justice the number, if any, of people in custody who have brought civil liability insurance claims against the State in each of the past five years; the total amount of the award in each case; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22953/96]

The following were the number of compensation claims brought by persons in prison custody in the last five years where awards were made, or which were settled prior to a court hearing: 1992, 14 claims; 1993, 17 claims; 1994, 23 claims; 1995, 17 claims; and 1996, 29 claims to date. The amounts paid out in these cases ranged from £63 to £37,500.

The number of compensation claims brought by persons in Garda custody in the last five years where awards were made, or which were settled prior to a court hearing, were as follows: 1992, 12 claims; 1993, 15 claims; 1994, 11 claims; 1995, 20 claims; and 1996, 13 claims to date. The amounts paid out in these cases ranged from £500 to £375,000.
