Vol. 472 No. 4

Written Answers. - Animal Feed Contents.

Patrick J. Morley

Ceist:

23 Mr. Morley asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the plans, if any, he has to introduce regulations mandating the full disclosure of all animal feed contents. [23399/96]

The labelling requirements for compound feedingstuffs are set out in Council Directive 79/373/EEC, as amended. These provide that compound feedingstuffs may not be marketed unless the packaging, the container or the lable shows all the ingredients used in the feed in descending order by weight. Alternatively, compounders have the option of declaring categories of ingredients which are prescribed in the directive. The directive has been transposed into national law.

At present the EU Commission is considering amendments to the legislation to provide that pig and poultry feedstuffs containing animal byproducts must indicate on the label: the name of the by-product and a warning to the effect that such feedstuffs may not be fed to ruminants.
