Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

94 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine if he intends to authorise a seal cull in any of our coastal waters within the next 12 months. [23594/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 93 and 94 together.

In the absence of reliable current data on seal populations a three year study on the distribution and migration patterns of seals in Irish waters is currently under way. The project, which is jointly funded by the Department, BIM and the Wildlife Service, will provide data on seal population levels and migratory patterns. The study is due to be completed in 1998. The date will enable us to quantify and assess more accurately seal populations and their possible impacts on fish stocks around the Irish coast.

I have no authority or remit in relation to culling seals which are a protected species under the Wildlife Act. Culls may only be undertaken on the basis of statutory permits issued by the Wildlife Service which has primary responsibility in this area.
