Vol. 472 No. 8

Written Answers. - Departmental Spending.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

47 Mr. Callely asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the total moneys spent on computerisation and related matters in his Department in each of the years 1995 and 1996; and the anticipated expenditure in this regard in 1997. [24223/96]

My Department is currently completing the present phase of its information technology plan which covers the period 1995-96. The main objectives are to meet the exceptional needs imposed by our EU Presidency and to enable my Department to meet its future needs in this area. This has involved the upgrading of computer and communications systems at headquarters, including the passport offices in Dublin and Cork and our 50 Missions abroad. It has also involved the installation of information technology-communications systems at Dublin Castle and other venues in connection with EU Presidency needs. Information technology related training programmes have also been provided. The cost in 1995 was £1,550,484 while the cost to 30 November 1996 — the latest date available — was £1,386,191. Budgets for 1997 have not yet been finalised but it is anticipated that expenditure in 1997 on computer related activities will amount to £700,000 approximately.
