Vol. 473 No. 1

Written Answers. - Burren National Park.

Tony Killeen

Ceist:

182 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the reason the proposed entry point to the Burren National Park at Gortlecken, County Clare, has not been accommodated in the existing partially-completed building; the cost to date of this building; and the projected cost of its demolition. [24723/96]

It is intended to accommodate the proposed entry point to the Burren National Park in part of the existing partially-completed building. Repeated hereunder for the information of the Deputy is the public notice for the planning application as it appeared in the national newspapers.

County Clare: The Commissioners of Public Works in Ireland, on behalf of the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht, are applying for permission for an Entry Point, at Crag Road (CR 103), Gortlecka and Knockaunroe, to the Burren National Park, comprising covered waiting area, toilets, ranger accommodation, ancillary parking, storage and signage.

This application proposes the removal of elements, including the equipment building, treatment plant (part), landscaping (part) and the retention and completion of elements, including landscaping (part), reservoir and treatment plant (part), of a previously proposed visitor centre which will otherwise be backfilled and the land reinstated to its previous condition.

Expenditure incurred to date on the Mullaghmore project amounts to some £2.2 million, inclusive of the cost of some land purchases, construction and associated costs, disruption costs following the suspension of works in 1993, site safety works, costs associated with the current planning application etc.

The cost of reinstating the site has not been accurately costed but could be of the order of £500,000 or higher.
