Vol. 473 No. 1

Written Answers. - Children with Special Needs.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

239 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education the number of children with learning disabilities currently enrolled in classes in mainstream education. [24437/96]

My Department does not keep precise records of the number of children with special educational needs who are integrated into mainstream classes at any particular time.

A survey conducted on behalf of the Special Education Review Committee in 1992 indicated that there were approximately 8,000 pupils with specific disabilities in ordinary classes in primary schools.
