Vol. 473 No. 4

Written Answers. - Kenmare (Kerry) Schools.

John O'Donoghue

Ceist:

376 Mr. O'Donoghue asked the Minister for Education the reason no board of management has been put in place for the new second level school in Kenmare, County Kerry; whether such a board of management will be put in place; the person currently responsible for the management of the school; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1592/97]

Ceist:

382 Mr. O'Donoghue asked the Minister for Education whether any date has been set for the amalgamation of the two post-primary schools in Kenmare, County Kerry; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1608/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 376 and 382 together.

The amalgamation of the two post-primary schools in Kenmare and the establishment of a community school is dependent on the provision of new accommodation. Phase one of the building development has been constructed and the architectural planning for phase two has been completed. The latter project is one of a large number of similar projects being considered in the context of the 1997 capital building programme. I am not in a position to say at this stage when construction will commence.

The two schools will continue to operate under their existing managements until the new school is established. However, arrangements are at present in train to establish a board of management to succeed the present structures when the proposed school is due to become operational. It is expected that this board will be put in place in the near future.
