Vol. 473 No. 4

Written Answers. - ESB Eel Catches.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

598 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for the Marine the amounts and weight of eels netted on behalf of the ESB in the River Liffey between Chapelizod and Dublin City; the number of nets used; and the use to which the eels were put. [1403/97]

The ESB, and their nominated fishermen, were authorised to use a maximum of 50 fyke nets to capture eels in the River Liffey during 1996, as part of the eel management survey being undertaken by the ESB. The aim of the survey is to establish the potential for job creation to be derived from eel fishing in the River Liffey.

The ESB has supplied the following information regarding the number of nets and weight of eels caught.

Number of Nets

Number of Eels Caught

50 Fyke Nets

2,768 kg

The eels were disposed of by sale by the ESB to eel dealers for export.
