Vol. 474 No. 4

Written Answers. - Voluntary Hospitals Superannuation Scheme.

Tom Kitt

Ceist:

101 Mr. T. Kitt asked the Minister for Health the position in relation to the pension entitlements of a nurse (details supplied) in Dublin 16 who spent a number of years in religious orders when no superannuation was paid; and the plans, if any, he has to assist nurses in such circumstances. [3298/97]

, Limerick East): The voluntary hospitals superannuation scheme, of which the individual is a member, provides for the payment of a lump sum and pension at retirement based on reckonable service. Having been notified of the cost involved in purchasing the service not covered by superannuation contributions, she commenced paying additional contributions to clear the liability with effect from September 1996. Provided these additional contributions continue to be paid and the liability is cleared, she will, at age 65, have reckonable service of 39.0658 years with estimated benefits — using current salary — of lump sum amounting to £31,274 and pension at the rate of £10,424 per annum. There are no plans to assist members of superannuation schemes where liabilities exist.
