Vol. 474 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Cork Army Camp.

Ned O'Keeffe

Ceist:

294 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Defence the current position regarding an army camp in County Cork; if his attention has been drawn to the urgent need to have refurbishment works carried out to the camp; if his attention has further been drawn to the shortage of civilian staff at the camp; and if he intends to run down the camp into an unworkable state and thus face closure. [3813/97]

I understand that the Deputy is referring to Fitzgerald Camp, Fermoy, County Cork. Between 1994 and 1996 refurbishment projects which cost in the region of £20,000 were carried out there. In addition, routine repairs and maintenance were undertaken by the corps of engineers. Normal maintenance works will continue to be carried out as required. There are six civilians employed at the camp and this number is considered to be adequate at present.
