Vol. 475 No. 5

Written Answers - Local Authority Funding.

Noel Dempsey

Ceist:

126 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has to abolish the collection charge imposed on town commissioners by county councils in the context of the rate support grant payments in view of the recent announcements in relation to local authority financing; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5320/97]

The new funding arrangements for local government which I announced on 19 December last involve replacing the rate support grant with the proceeds of motor taxation. Therefore, the question of deductions of the type mentioned will not arise in the future. The position of town commissioners under the new funding arrangements is being considered in the context of the forthcoming legislation on the subject.
