The strength of the Garda Síochána on 31 January 1997 was 10,788 members all ranks. This figure does not include 860 trainee gardaí in phases 1, 2 and 3 of the Garda Síochána training programme.
There are 2,477 staff of all grades serving in the prison service at present.
