Limerick East): The number of deaths from suicide for males and females for each of the years 1992 to 1995 is set out in the table below. The latest year for which annual figures are available is 1995. Figures for the first three quarters of 1996 show that 195 deaths from suicide for males and 52 deaths from suicide for females were registered.
The death registration system is the principal source for statisical information on cause of death, including deaths from suicide. Information on particular occupations and professions recorded on death certificates is in all countries known to be subject to many sources of bias, incompleteness and unreliability. The circumstances in which the information is sought are difficult and very often the person providing the information does not have an accurate picture of the previous occupation(s) of the deceased. For this reason the Central Statistics Office does not provide any analysis of cause of dealth by occupation in its Annual Reports on Vital Statistics.
