Vol. 476 No. 5

Written Answers - Social Welfare Credits.

Willie O'Dea

Ceist:

221 Mr. O'Dea asked the Minister for Social Welfare if persons in receipt of disability allowance are entitled to earn credits for social welfare benefit purposes. [7415/97]

The purpose of weekly credited contributions is to enable an insured worker to maintain his or her social insurance entitlements while out of the workforce due, for example, to periods of unemployment or illness. My Department is currently undertaking a review of the present arrangements for the award of credits and the question of awarding credited contributions to disability allowance recipients will be looked at in that context. However, I am not in a position to say at this point what the likely outcome will be.
