Vol. 476 No. 7

Written Answers. - Drug Treatment Services.

Michael McDowell

Ceist:

159 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Health whether the premises of the Meath Hospital, Dublin 8 will be used as a drug treatment centre after the hospital is moved to Tallaght, Dublin 24; whether it is proposed to consult with local residents' associations about the future use of the Meath Hospital buildings; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8323/97]

Limerick East): The provision of drug treatment services in Dublin is a matter for the Eastern Health Board in the first instance. In considering locations for drug treatment centres, the board has regard to the extent of drug misuse in a particular area, the existing drug treatment services and the availability of suitable premises. However, the intention is to sell the Meath Hospital on the opening of Tallaght Hospital and to apply the proceeds to the support of activities associated with the new hospital.

If the Eastern Health Board decides that drug misuse treatment facilities are required at any location in that area all options for the provision of such premises will be considered by the board, in consultation with my Department. The board will also consult local communities to ensure any concerns which they may have will be fully addressed.
