Vol. 477 No. 1

Written Answers. - Afforestation Programme.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

213 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he has satisfied himself with regulations and controls in the forestry sector; if he will give details of the development of forestry in Ireland over the past ten years; the likely further development; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8503/97]

The regulations and controls on forestry development are regularly reviewed to ensure the optimum development of the sector. I would refer the Deputy for example to the review last year of forestry, environmental impact assessment and planning permission carried out between my Department and the Department of the Environment, and to the review of my Department's guidelines on forestry and fisheries and on forestry and the landscape which have been put in train this year.

Details of the development of forestry in Ireland over the past ten years and likely future developments are contained in the Strategic Plan for the Development of the Forestry Sector in Ireland, published in July 1996.
