250 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Justice the reason for discrepancies in Border allowances between Army and Garda personnel who are exposed to the same risks and carry out largely similar duties; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9713/97]

Minister for Justice (Mrs. Owen)

The allowances paid to Garda personnel are those agreed at the Garda Conciliation Council. The position with regard to Army personnel is a matter for the Minister for Defence.
