Vol. 477 No. 5

Written Answers. - Inquest into Death of Irish Citizen.

Ned O'Keeffe

Ceist:

71 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make representations to ensure that an inquest is held in the United Kingdom following the death there of an Irish citizen (details supplied). [9701/97]

The inquest into the death in tragic circumstances of this person in London in September 1996 was adjourned on 11 September 1996 pending the outcome of forensic tests and completion of police inquiries. Unfortunately, its proposed resumption on 10 April 1997 had to be postponed due to the inability of the police officer investigating the case to attend. I understand that the officer concerned is on extended sick leave.

The Coroner's office has informed the Embassy in London that the resumption of the inquest must await the return to duty of the police officer and that it is not yet known when that is likely to be. I understand that, through their solicitor, the family of the deceased are maintaining direct contact with the Coroner's office about the resumption of the inquest.
