Vol. 477 No. 6

Written Answers. - Local Authority Rents.

Rory O'Hanlon

Ceist:

64 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for the Environment if he will ensure that all local authorities enter an arrangement to collect local authority rents, where appropriate, under the Department of Social Welfare household budget scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10062/97]

The management of their dwellings, including arrangements for rent collection, is a matter for each local authority. However, guidelines on best practice in housing management, prepared by the housing management group for local authorities, recommend that authorities should make available a range of convenient and flexible methods of rent payment, including the use of the household budget scheme, where it is available. This matter is also being pursued with authorities in the context of workshops currently being held for local authority staff to promote the implementation of the guidelines.
