In 1996 my Department allocated £3.255 million under the Adult Literacy and Community Education Scheme (ALCES) and the Special Initiatives for Disadvantaged Adults Scheme (SPIDAS), for the provision of literacy and basic education courses and special initiatives for disadvantaged adults.

Byrne asked the Minister for Education whether funding for the Area Development Management (ADM) Ltd. partnership in respect of adult education was paid to the partnerships, to the vocational education committees, or to any other body or bodies by or through her Department in 1996 and 1997; and the amount of any such allocation. In 1996, my Department paid £140,000 to eight vocational education committees towards the ADM partnerships in respect of their adult education activities. No decision has yet been taken on funding for the partnerships for 1997.
