Vol. 478 No. 2

Ceisteanna — Questions. - State Receptions.

Bertie Ahern

Ceist:

4 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Taoiseach the commitments, if any, he has given to hold State receptions before the end of 1997.

The only reception I shall host before the end of 1997 is planned for 26 May in Dublin Castle to mark the holding of the 48th World Congress of the International Real Estate Federation which will take place in Dublin from 24-30 May. My predecessor agreed in 1993 to host this reception and I am happy to fulfil that commitment.

The Taoiseach's successor might hold it.

In view of the high numbers expected to attend the congress and the limited numbers which can be accommodated in Dublin Castle, the Minister for Justice may host another reception on 27 May.

The Taoiseach is not very popular.

Will it be the last supper?

The Deputy should not upset the Taoiseach.

I am not talking about the Caravaggio.

I am looking forward to many suppers with all my Government colleagues throughout Europe and elsewhere and to working in conjunction with my colleagues on these benches and in amity with my colleagues on the other side of the House in Opposition.
