Vol. 478 No. 3

Written Answers. - Intervention Beef.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

106 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the volume and value of intervention beef which has been distributed in Ireland to date; the likely distribution over the next 12 months; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10996/97]

A total of 6,327 tonnes of intervention beef with a value of IR£26,135,554 has been distributed throughout Ireland between December 1987 and November 1996 under the European Community's scheme for the supply of food for the benefit of the most deprived persons in the Community.

Three hundred and fifty seven tonnes of intervention beef have been allocated to Ireland for 1997. Approximately 47.6 tonnes to a value of IR£192.089 have already been distributed to various charities in the first quarter of this year under this scheme.

My Department remains in close contact with all the charities involved and it is intended that as much as possible of our 1997 allocation will be distributed by the end of the year.
