Vol. 478 No. 7

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Mary Coughlan

Ceist:

142 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Education if she will confirm that the sixth teacher at Scoil Mhuire, Creeslough, County Donegal will be retained in September 1997; when a remedial teacher will be appointed; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11942/97]

The staffing of a national school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous year.

The enrolment of Scoil Mhuire, Creeslough on 30 September 1996 was 149 pupils. This enrolment warrants a staffing of a principal and four assistant teachers for the 1997-98 school year. Accordingly, the fifth assistant's post at the school will be suppressed at the end of the current school year.

I am currently considering the possibility of making additional remedial and resource teacher posts available to primary schools for the forthcoming school year. I can assure the Deputy that the needs of Scoil Mhuire will be taken into account as part of this process.
