Vol. 479 No. 2

Written Answers. - Parking Regulations.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

131 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment the current position regarding the parking of large commercial vehicles in residential areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12981/97]

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

160 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment if he has signed the order in relation to banning the parking of heavy goods vehicles in residential areas; if so, when will it come into operation; and the penalty for non-compliance. [12938/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 131 and 160 together.

Comprehensive traffic regulations which I have made under section 35 of the Road Traffic Act, 1994 provide that local authorities may restrict the parking of large vehicles in specific places or areas. The regulations will come into effect on 1 October next. The maximum penalty applying to a contravention of a provision of the regulations is £150 in respect of a first offence, £350 in respect of a second offence and £350 plus, at the discretion of the court, imprisonment for up to 3 months in respect of a third or subsequent offence committed in any period of twelve consecutive months.
