Vol. 480 No. 2

Written Answers. - Electro-magnetic Radiation.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

162 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Health his views on the concern and perception of many people who understand that proximity to ESB masts or pylons is a contributory factor with many illnesses and medical conditions; the scientific study, if any, which has been made on these matters; if he will refer Deputy Ahern to relevant data; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13393/97]

I am aware of public concern regarding the possible adverse health effects of electro-magnetic radiation emanating from overhead power lines. A considerable volume of research has been carried out internationally by various scientific and health authorities including the World Health Organisation. All significant research in this area is monitored here by the Department of Enterprise and Employment with whom my Department maintains liaison in relation to the human health aspects. The Department of Enterprise and Employment has pointed out that power line voltages and concentrations of power lines in Ireland are well below those in most industrialised countries. In 1988 and 1992 that Department published major reports on the issue, covering the latest research developments and the assessments of this research by recognised international health advisory organisations. The general body of evidence to date has not established an association between this form of radiation and ill-health. Research and studies in this area are ongoing and my Department and the Department of Enterprise and Employment keep in touch regarding any significant developments.
