Vol. 480 No. 2

Written Answers. - Mental Handicap Services.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

220 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Health the course he intends to take in relation to eliminating the waiting lists for services for persons with a mental handicap; if he will continue the five-year funding programme started by the previous Government; the amount of additional resources which will be made available in 1997 in the autumn budget; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14031/97]

The Government has set out its commitment to develop services for persons with a mental handicap in An Action Programme for the Millennium.

A key priority will include substantially improving services for persons with a mental handicap and autism especially in relation to the provision of adequate residential facilities.

In relation to resources to be provided in 1998, the Deputy will be aware that the details of the budget are yet to be worked out.
