Vol. 480 No. 2

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Jim Mitchell

Ceist:

284 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the plans, if any, which exist in her Department for the improvement of the stretch of the Grand Canal from Suir Bridge to Third Lock Bridge, Inchicore, Dublin 8 and from Third Lock Bridge to the Kylemore Road, Dublin 10; the full nature of the improvements proposed; and when the work is likely to commence and be completed. [13855/97]

I am conscious of the need to maintain and enhance the existing character and attractiveness of the Grand Canal and the town-scape value of the canal corridor in this area.

In the past year, two community employment schemes have been established to upgrade the Grand Canal in the Clondalkin and Ballyfermot areas. These schemes employ some 30 people and they are aimed at enhancing the public amenity aspect of the canal by landscaping works including tree planting, litter collection, etc. At present a survey is being undertaken to identify species suitable for planting on this section of the canal.

A maintenance contract has again been placed for grass cutting and the removal of light litter. In addition, a contract has recently been placed for the cutting of weed from the canal bed.

A canals community festival was held on 4 July, near the Third Lock Bridge with the active assistance and co-operation of my Department. This occasion also marked the launch of the Canals Community Partnership which is designed to target resources to particular areas by involving the State, the social partners and local communities in a joint partnership for economic, educational and social development.

The proposed Luas system will impact on canal property along Davitt Road and officials of my Department will hold further discussions with CIE to ensure that this development does not impact adversely on the canal.
