Vol. 480 No. 2

Written Answers. - Constituency Office Staff.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

60 Mr. Broughan asked the Taoiseach if he will confirm reports that 18 telephone lines were requested and are established for his constituency office in Government Buildings; the number of personnel working in this office; whether they will be engaged exclusively in constituency work; the position and salary of the person who will be the manager in charge of this constituency office; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13981/97]

There are four direct telephone lines and one fax line in my constituency office in the Department of the Taoiseach. This is one fewer direct line than was provided in the Taoiseach's constituency office of the previous Administration.

Eight staff have been assigned to this office, six of whom are civil servants. Of these, three are seconded from other Government Departments.

The above staff includes two clerical typists who will, in addition to their work in the constituency office, also provide a typing service as required for other areas of the Department. The remaining staff will be primarily engaged on constituency office work but may, as is standard practice, carry out other responsibilities if required.

The office will be headed by a personal assistant administrator whose salary, in accordance with Government guidelines, will comprise existing salary plus 10 per cent, that is, £28,321 per annum. This salary level takes account of the fact that no overtime is paid for the substantial level of extra attendance which is likely to arise.
