Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Sale of Tobacco Products.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

255 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will outline in tabular fashion the number of summary proceedings brought and prosecuted by the current and previous Minister for Health, officers appointed by the Minister for Health, and each of the eight health boards, in relation to the sale of tobacco products to those under 16 years for each of the years from 1988 to 1997 in view of the fact that it is an offence under section 3 of the Tobacco (Health Promotion and Protection) Act 1988, to sell tobacco products to those under 16 years of age and that summary proceedings in relation to such an offence may be brought and prosecuted by him or by an officer appointed by him for that purpose of the Minister or of a health board under section 8; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14362/97]

No prosecutions were brought by Ministers, Ministers' officers or health board officers during the period indicated.

I am conducting a general review on health and smoking policy and as part of this review I will be looking at the area of enforcement. When this review is completed I will make a further statement on the matter.
