Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Schools Refurbishment.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

573 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Education if a primary school (details supplied) in County Wexford will be assisted in terms of the repairs to the roof and chutes; and if so, when such repairs will take place. [14417/97]

The Office of Public Works in Wexford has been asked for a report on the extent of works required in this school and the estimated cost of these works.

When this report has been received in my Department a decision will be made on grant sanction and the chairperson will be informed accordingly.

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

574 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education if he will approve the application from the board of management of a school (details supplied) in County Kilkenny for grant assistance towards the provision of a physical education hall where the current teaching space for physical education classes is inadequate. [14419/97]

It is the policy of my Department to provide PE halls on a phased basis as resources permit to all schools which do not already have them.

Twelve schools were included on the 1997 capital programme for physical education halls. Construction will commence on a number of these in 1997 and architectural design will be completed on the remainder.

The question of providing physical education facilities at the school in question can only be considered in the context of the capital available for post-primary building purposes generally. Because of the huge demand for additional classroom accommodation in schools throughout the country, I am not in a position at this stage to state when physical education facilities will be provided in this particular case.

However, I can assure the Deputy that should financial circumstances permit, the school will be given every consideration.
