Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Ceist:

119 Mrs. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Education when it is proposed to commence work on the second phase of the Community College in Kenmare, County Kerry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15105/97]

The closing date for the receipt of tenders for the proposed extension to Kenmare Community School is 1 October 1997, following which the design team will be required to prepare a tender report. It would not be appropriate at this point to comment in detail about the outcome of the tender competition.

When the planning and building unit of my Department has examined the tender report and it has been found to be satisfactory, the next stage will be the placing of the contract and the commencement of work on site.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

120 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education the steps, if any, which have been taken by his Department since May 1997 to fulfil the commitment to erect a new permanent school building at Coláiste Cionn Toirc Community School, Castlepollard, County Westmeath to cater for 200 pupils there; if he will give an assurance that this building will commence construction in 1998; the remaining steps, if any, there are to be taken by his Department to ensure that it is ready for construction in 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15106/97]

Approval to appoint a design team for the provision of a permanent extension at Coláiste Cionn Torc, Castlepollard was conveyed to County Westmeath Vocational Education Committee in November 1996.

Following correspondence between my Department and the vocational education committee, to ensure that public procurement procedures in relation to the engagement of consultants were complied with, the design team was approved and the vocational education committee was requested to instruct them to prepare a stage 1 site suitability and site report in May 1997. This report is expected in my Department very shortly.

The question of proceeding to construction will not arise until the architectural design process has been successfully completed.

My Department has asked the vocational education committee to deal with this project with urgency.

Ceist:

121 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Education when funding for a perimeter fence for the Bishop Galvin and Bishop Shanahan schools in Templeogue, Dublin 16 will be committed by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15107/97]

My Department has received an application from the school manager for grant assistance towards the cost of the security fencing at Bishop Galvin and Shanahan national schools, Templogue, Dublin 16.

The capital funding available in 1997 was allocated in full by my predecessor. Consequently, I am not in a position to authorise grant assistance towards the cost of this project at the moment.

I have asked my Department's building unit to review the budgetary position and to allow the proposed project at Bishop Shanahan and Galvin schools proceed at the earliest opportunity.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

122 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education if he will give details of the building works and capital expenditure on Coláiste Cionn Toirc, Castlepollard, County Westmeath in 1996 and 1997; the progress, if any, which has been made in relation to the design of a new school building for this location; the number of on-site meetings and design team meetings which have taken place; the level of consultation with the education partners regarding this project; when this project will go to tender; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15108/97]

Temporary accommodation has been provided at Coláiste Cionn Toirc, Castlepollard, County Westmeath. The expenditure incurred during 1996 and 1997 in providing this accommodation amounts to £130,000.

The design team nominated by County Westmeath Vocational Education Committee for the provision of a permanent extension at the school was approved in May 1997 and the vocational education committee was requested to instruct them to prepare a stage 1 site suitability and site report.
The question of proceeding to tender will not arise until the architectural design process has been successfully completed.
