Vol. 480 No. 7

Written Answers. - Public Transport Services.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

36 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she has satisfied herself with the current licensing arrangements of public transport services; her views on whether there is adequate competition between Bus Éireann and private operators; and her policy on the optimum level of such competition. [14901/97]

The provision of passenger road transport services, aside from services provided by Bus Éireann and Bus Átha Cliath, is governed by the Road Transport Act, 1932. There is wide-spread acceptance that there are a number of difficulties associated with the implementation of this legislation and there is a general consensus that it is in need of updating to meet the requirements of the travelling public.

I intend to bring forward legislative proposals in due course designed to facilitate the development of a healthy, competitive public transport industry.
