36 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she has satisfied herself with the current licensing arrangements of public transport services; her views on whether there is adequate competition between Bus Éireann and private operators; and her policy on the optimum level of such competition. The provision of passenger road transport services, aside from services provided by Bus Éireann and Bus Átha Cliath, is governed by the Road Transport Act, 1932. There is wide-spread acceptance that there are a number of difficulties associated with the implementation of this legislation and there is a general consensus that it is in need of updating to meet the requirements of the travelling public.
I intend to bring forward legislative proposals in due course designed to facilitate the development of a healthy, competitive public transport industry.
