Vol. 480 No. 8

Written Answers. - Hearing Protection.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

25 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Defence the procedures in place to prevent Defence Force personnel experiencing hearing problems in the course of their duties; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15050/97]

These are comprehensive procedures in place for the protection of hearing of members of the Defence Forces on the ranges and in field training. These include guidelines for the conduct of range practices, instruction on the use of ear defenders and comprehensive training not only on induction but also at various stages of a soldier's career. I am satisfied that the ear protection equipment in use at present, and purchased after broad international research, is the best that technology can provide at this time. Both procedures and equipment for hearing protection are kept under constant review.
