Vol. 481 No. 1

Written Answers. - Smear Test Results.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

153 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason for the long delay in obtaining the results of a smear test for a person (details supplied) in County Wexford; if he will have arrangements made to have the test results conveyed to her doctor; the action, if any, he is taking to ensure that similar delays do not continue to occur with the results of smear tests; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15280/97]

I understand from the South-Eastern Health Board that the result of the test referred to was communicated to the person in question by letter on 30 September 1997. At present, the cervical smear service for the South-Eastern Health Board is under contract with the University College Hospital Galway, and I am informed that there are plans for a local service under the cancer strategy. Approval has been given to the Western Health Board for the appointment of a cytoscreener and I understand from the health board that an appointment will be made as soon as possible. In addition, my Department has given approval to the Western Health Board to appoint a temporary cytoscreener to clear the backlog and reduce the delay in providing results. I understand that this person has taken up duty.
